Lightfoot brought us a blacker black after studying the oxidation of new compound, aniline. Aniline purple had been accidentally created a few decades earlier while student Willam H. Perkins was trying to synthesize quinine and that accidental discovery set off a giant Victorian wave of mauve everything. In this rich black
